What do really mean by comfort zone ?
The term, comfort zone, has become so cliched now a days
Almost everybody talks about it. We hear statements like these :
“We should not be in our comfort zone”
“We should push ourselves, challenge ourselves”
“Growth happens outside comfort zone” and so on….
Now all this is good to speak about, but what exactly is this comfort zone?
First, let’s look at some of the terms which come to your mind when you think about comfort ?
Safety, security, familiarity, right ?
It's a comfortable safe space, where you don't have to exert too much of an effort, where things are fairly manageable
But I have come up with a very simple way to explain this concept
Here it is
Wherever you are today, that's your comfort zone.
That’s really it. That’s my definition
Now, this understanding is based on the premise that you have so much more potential than you currently explore.
Most of us don’t even know what is our true potential and what all we can achieve in our lives – whether it is at work, in our relationships, with our business or with our health.
Let’s break down this premise into a 3-steps of Awareness, Desire and Action and we will use 3 simple yet powerful questions :
Step 1 : Awareness
First question to ask yourself
Can I do better ?
This is the fundamental question of awareness
Ask yourself :
Can I have a better job?
Can my business grow further?
Can I have better relationships?
Can I make more money?
Can I have better health?
And so on….
And the answer to these questions invariably is yes. You can
Step 2 : Desire
Second question to ask yourself
Do I want to do better?
This is the fundamental question of desire
Now, some of you may say that you are very happy, very satisfied where you are today and that's perfectly fine.
It's a matter of choice, but at least you understand that there’s a potential gap between where you are currently and where you can be
Step 3 : Action
Third and final question to ask yourself
“If I can do better and I want to do better, what should I do about it?”
And you can break this question further into specific questions such as
“What is really holding me back from doing better?”
What are some of the next steps I should be taking? What should I start doing? What should I stop doing?
And this way, when you combine awareness, desire and action, you start pushing outside your comfort zone
What you will also realize is that this comfort zone is constantly shifting as you grow, which means it is a dynamic zone
Now does that mean that you have to constantly push yourself forever ?
Ofcourse not !
You will always have the power to decide what is right for you, when you have reached a state of equilibrium, happiness and fulfilment
So here’s my invitation to you
Go back, reflect and answer the 3 questions and see what comes up for you
