confidence

Is being overconfident really bad?

What is your view about overconfidence?

Do you think that overconfidence is a slippery slope or a recipe for disaster?

If yes, then with due apologies, I don’t agree with you :)

You see….

We're often told to temper our ambitions, to stay grounded, to avoid overestimating our abilities

But what if I told you that overconfidence, far from being a hindrance, is actually a catalyst for progress?

What if I challenged the conventional wisdom and argued that it's better to err on the side of overconfidence than to succumb to self-doubt and hesitation?

At the heart of overconfidence lies a powerful force – the willingness to take action

That in itself can be a game changer

Underconfidence or lack of confidence prevents us from taking action

It shackles us with fear and indecision. It creates stagnation

Overconfidence, on the other hand, propels us forward, urging us to leap into the unknown and seize opportunities

You see….

The only way to bring in change in our lives, get different results in by taking action

Whether you fail at something or succeed can be determined only when you take action

Lack of confidence often prevents us from taking action in the first place

That's the real problem

Michael Jordan, widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time famously once declared, "I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."

In essence, this distinction between over and underconfidence is the difference between stagnation and growth, between watching from the sidelines and actively participating in the game of life

Overconfidence often leads individuals to take bold action without succumbing to the paralysis of analysis

Not only that, overconfident individuals tend to bounce back quickly from setbacks and failures. Their unwavering belief in themselves allows them to view obstacles as temporary setbacks rather than insurmountable barriers, fostering resilience and perseverance

I also believe that overconfident individuals are more likely to challenge the status quo and think outside the box. Their willingness to push boundaries and explore unconventional ideas can lead to innovative breakthroughs in various fields

Startups and entrepreneurs are a great example – most of them work on a completely new product, a new idea which they believe can change the world

They face countless rejections and setbacks. Yet, fuelled by an unwavering belief in their vision, many of them persist

No matter how good the product or technology is, somewhere deep inside, every startup founder has an undercurrent of audacity and overconfidence, which enables them to pursue their idea with relentless enthusiasm

Ofcourse, there are many pitfalls of being overconfident and I must caution against them

Sometimes, you may underestimate the complexity of tasks or overestimate your own abilities, leading to reckless decision-making and increased susceptibility to failure

Excessive confidence can blind individuals to their own shortcomings, making it difficult for them to acknowledge mistakes or seek feedback

Overconfidence may come across as being arrogant or dismissive, alienating others and undermining collaborative efforts. The tendency to dominate conversations and disregard differing opinions can create tension in interpersonal relationships

However, it's essential to distinguish between blind bravado and strategic confidence

True overconfidence isn't about deluding oneself into believing in false abilities; rather, it's about embracing a mindset of boldness and resilience in the face of uncertainty

If you look at the other side of the argument, lack of confidence often results in missed opportunities and stagnation

You may hesitate to seize opportunities or pursue ambitious goals due to self-doubt and fear of failure

You tend to underestimate your own abilities and potential, perpetuating a cycle of self-limiting beliefs. This negative self-perception may prevent you from realizing your full potential and pursuing your aspirations

Look....

While it's essential to temper overconfidence with humility and self-awareness, embracing a mindset of boldness and resilience can unlock a world of possibilities in both professional and personal spheres

So, if there is a choice between being overconfident or lacking confidence, I urge you to err on the side of overconfidence

That way, you will atleast take some action

So, the next time you find yourself hesitating on the brink of opportunity, ask yourself:

What would happen if I dared to be a little more overconfident?

Dare to be bold

Dare to be overconfident

Your greatest triumphs await on the other side of self-doubt
